Mother's Day and the start of Summer!

Mother's Day this year was quite different than last year... it was double the blessing!  Cameron was just 2 weeks old then.  He cooperated much better for the pictures than Emerson!  Frank's parents were in town and we all enjoyed brunch at Nico's on their patio.  It was really nice and surprisingly calm.  Cameron was very easy going just hanging out in his carseat while we ate and Emerson was her normal playful self.

The one picture we got out of 25 attempts!  :)

We are also looking forward to a fun summer!  Emerson is especially already enjoying the sunshine.  We have taken her swimming at the neighborhood pool when Frank's family was in town and Frank has gotten her in our hot-tub as well (not turned on hot of course!).  She loves to splash so much!!  While they are outside swimming Mom and Cameron hang out in the air conditioned house. :)

I think this lighting is pretty cool looking!

In our neighborhood pool.

The other "event" I guess I should mention is that I did have my 30th birthday.  :)  I have been more cranky about this than I thought I would be, but I am having a celebration with friends in another week or so.  I just couldn't see myself really relaxing and having a night out with such a young newborn, but I decided to go for it anyway.  :)  On my birthday we did have a great day with my family.  With it being Memorial Day weekend we had lots of delicious food including ribs, BBQ chicken, sausage, and slow cooked brisket... oh, and my mom's famous potato salad.  It was a wonderful day with my family and filled with more activity than normal... we were all pooped at the end of the day!

Just us.  :)

I have been thinking about writing a blog post about Emerson that would be sort of a massive milestone and photo log that as briefly as possible covered the things she achieved from birth to 18 months, but I am not sure I will get to it.  It would be nice since I didn't blog when she was so young... so we will see!

Cameron is a month old!

Cameron is already one month old!  This has been such an exciting adjustment for everyone and the time has flown by!  It still seems like it was just yesterday that I was still pregnant and waiting for his arrival.  Our little guy has really grown so much and is doing really well.  As I said before he is such a calm baby. Since he is just 4 weeks old we do not have a lot of activity going on, but we are seeing lots of little changes in Cameron:

  • He is much more alert and aware of sounds and voices.  He definitely responds to mommy's voice, and also Daddy and Emerson I believe.
  • Somehow he still manages to sleep through the loud sounds of Emerson playing when he naps in the living room.  :)
  • It took what felt like forever, but his umbilical cord stump fell off not long before 3 weeks.  Talk about a relief... that was a hassle to avoid getting it wet during a bath!
  • We have introduced "tummy time".  Cherie is helping with this more since I'm still not that limber getting off the floor, but I do it on the weekend.  He isn't sure that he likes it at first, but then he calms down.  He is already so strong and can lift his head up for a long time!
  • He is a really great sleeper so far!  I have been trying to keep him on a schedule (yes, already!) so for now he gets a bottle between 9-9:30 and we try to lay him down by 10-10:30.  He has been sleeping until 3 and sometimes longer (to 3:45 for a few days!) and then we lay him down and he sleeps until 7:45- 8:30 or so, when he gets another bottle.  During the day he eats around 11, then again around 2, then around 6, and then has his last bottle for the day.  He naps really well during the day as well, though I am not counting how long.  I may adjust his last bottle since we are finding that he gets a little cranky and seems to want to eat around 8 or 8:30 and then we calm him down only to have a difficult time waking him up to eat.  :)
  • Cameron has 6 bottles a day now, with 5 ounces in each.  For a while we were feeding him 7 times a day with around 3.5 ounces per bottle.  For now this amount seems to satisfy him so we will see how long that is the case.  He is a good sized baby so it won't be long before we have another increase I am sure.
  • He has now too big for "newborn" clothes and fits well in 3 month clothes, depending on the brand.  Carters run small so he actually fits into some of their 6 month onesies.
  • We are now out of the newborn diapers and just in time because they were getting tight!  So now we are on to size 1.
  • We are using the full arsenal of baby gear to give Cameron some variety.  He naps in the pack 'n play, but also spends time in the swing (which he really seems to favor), the Mamaroo swing, and the bouncer.  We also spend time cuddling as well, though those of you who know me well know I am not one to hold a baby ALL THE TIME.  :)
  • Pretty much every night we go on a walk around the neighborhood as a family.  Cameron enjoys the stroller and Emerson always has fun in her wagon.  At first Cameron's eyes were always tightly shut, but he now looks around when we walk, though I know he can't see too far beyond seeing me pushing the stroller.
  • Bath time is enjoyable!  Frank and I were pleasantly surprised to find that Cameron loves his bath.  He just seems so relaxed and content, much different than Emerson who screamed for the first several weeks when she had a bath.  He is not a big fan of having his scalp rubbed with shampoo, but I know he will enjoy that too soon.
  • Cameron makes some sweet coo-ing sounds sometimes.  It seems like I hear it many times right as he tinkles... it is sort of an "Ahhh" sound (I think this is a guy thing, am I right?)... then shortly after he cries because he does not like to have a wet diaper.  He also makes that sweet sound when I am rocking with him and holding him sometimes.  Oh, and when he has his bottle he makes a sweet humming kind of sound... you can tell he is happy to be getting to eat.  :)
  • I have not seen a "real" smile yet (it is too early still), but he has smiled many times in his sleep while I am holding him or watching him.  It is incredibly sweet and I can't wait for him to do it on purpose in response to us talking and interacting with him.  This will probably happen in the next couple of weeks so we will see!
2 week visit stats:
Weight: 9 pounds 1.5 ounces (50-75%)
Height: 21 1/4 inches (50-75%)
HC: 38 cm (75%)

1 month visit stats:
Weight: 11 pounds .01 ounces (75-90%)
Height: 22 1/2 inches (75-90%)
HC: 39 3/4 cm (75-90%)

Cameron was also able to meet his Uncle Glenn and "Aunt" Sarah when they came to visit from Myrtle Beach this month.  He really loved laying in Glenn's arms and on his lap.  He also got to spend some more time with both of our families.  Our kiddos are very loved... we are so fortunate.  It has been a fun, wonderful, exciting, and tiring month.  We thank our families for helping us get through the first weeks, especially since I was not as mobile after the c-section.  It has been extremely helpful having Cherie here.  Emerson is able to go along with her routine and she also helps me with Cameron so I can run errands and do other things I need to get done.

That really pretty much covers the excitement this month!  I am excited to see the changes next month brings!

His hat has already gotten too small, but this was taken early this month.

Bright-eyed beautiful boy!

Cameron's Arrival!

Cameron is already a week old today!  I thought I  would try to write an update about what has happened and see how much I can do in 20 minutes!  (ok, that was not realistic... took a tad longer, but Blogger allows me to save this so I can finish it later and post this! )  :)

On Sunday, April 29th I woke up and thought my water had broken/leaked... not going into details here, but it was not a normal situation.  I also was having some stronger contractions and it was new for them to happen in the morning and that they would continue.  I mentioned this to Frank and we were not sure what to think of it.  I decided to call the on-call number for my doctor's office and the on call doctor said I would need to go to Labor and Delivery at the hospital to be seen.  This was both exciting and a moment where we both were thinking, oh geez, what if we are wrong?  I wanted to dry an outfit for Cameron that I washed that morning so while it was in the dryer I packed a few more things in the hospital bag, Frank loaded the car with our bags, and we surveyed what was left to do in the house.  Since it was our last "relaxing" weekend I hadn't done our laundry yet, hadn't gotten groceries, and a few other things.  So I made a list to mention this to whoever would see it first and left my car key out since I knew one of our families would need it for Emerson.  And off we went to the hospital.  It seemed so quiet there... nobody was in the lobby, and it seemed calm when we arrived in Labor and Delivery.  They asked me a few questions and within minutes we were taken to a room.  Soon after a nurse came in and we explained everything.  She checked me again and I was not dilated or showing signs of labor in that way, but I was still having contractions.  They were checking my blood pressure and it was coming back very high every time.  Our nurse was an Asian lady named "Na" and she was asking me if I had preclampsia and I said I hadn't been having any problems, and she said "You are now"... In short, we were not going home because it was high enough she said the baby would be coming today.  But wait!!...my doctor was not on-call this weekend... this was not what I thought would happen.  With the back and forth with the decision on a c-section I had assured myself that Dr. Kaye would handle everything and it would be fine.  Na said that he probably would not be able to come, but that the on-call doctor would try to reach him.  I needed to not worry she said and explained we would be having a c-section right away basically.  She said we could wait for my mom/family to arrive... I had began to feel very uneasy with things and could feel my anxiety growing every second that passed.  Frank changed for surgery into some scrub like outfit and they prepared me as well.  My family arrived and I  was able to see Emerson too, which made me feel better emotionally, though evidently my blood pressure got even higher.  Not surprising... I was really beginning to freak out inside... but I was doing my best to not worry.  So they wheeled me into the operating room... I had a hard time being calm before they gave me the epidural, but then I felt better.  They had also given me magnesium, which would prove to be some downright awful medicine, but it protected me from having a seizure due to my blood pressure.  Soon after I was told good news that Dr. Kaye was driving in and would perform the surgery and I felt better knowing that, and then Frank was able to come in the operating room too.  They began the surgery and it was not long before we heard that amazing and overwhelming sound of our baby boy screaming/crying... I watched as he was handed to two nurses who immediately cleaned him and performed all the checks, cleared his lungs, checked his response, etc.  All the while screaming and kicking his arms and legs... tears of joy were in my eyes... thank goodness everything was ok.  He arrived April, 29th at 1:06 pm weighing 9 pounds, 6 ounces and was 20 inches long.  A sweet heaven sent little chunk of a baby.  They brought him over to my face since they were still doing the surgery and we got to meet for the first time.  I was so happy and very in love.  I was able to give him a kiss and look at his precious little face... my little man was finally here!

After this point for me things become very blurred and the drugs were having a heavy impact on me!  I was in our recovery room and our families came in to meet Cameron and see me too.  After this Cameron got his first bath, I tried breastfeeding, bonding time, etc.  A few meal times passed and things are a blur there.  But Cameron was doing great... The next day they took me off magnesium and the epidural was removed.  Another wave of feeling bad hit then... and I was being prepared to move to another room.  I almost fainted as 2 nurses and Frank helped me go to the bathroom... I couldn't walk but used this nifty walker/wheeler contraption to get there.  Then I arrived in the Post-Partum room.  This is the end of day 2, Monday.  I was really feeling down and didn't like how my body felt, but the wonderful nurses assured me I would feel much better each day.  Thankfully they were right. We stayed in the hospital for another 3 nights as they were wanting to get control of my blood pressure.  All through pregnancy it was fine, and then it was a problem and has made my recovery a little more challenging.

The great news though is that Cameron is absolutely amazing.  God has blessed us with 2 wonderful children and we feel very blessed.  We spent the time in the hospital working on getting me to feel better and stable, work on breast feeding, and making sure Cameron was doing well adjusting to life outside.  Some friends came to visit and we spent time with our families.   Even though I had a hard time with recovery I was so happy with the hospital staff and their assistance with everything.  I didn't feel the same pressure with breast feeding as I did when Emerson was born, they were just very helpful.  The nurses for me were so helpful in easing my mind and getting me whatever I needed.    When we were finally able to go home I was glad, but also a bit concerned with the adjustment.  But everything has gone so well... each day is better than the last as far as getting the hang of things.  Cameron is the best sleeper and is so content so far.  I think maybe he will take after Frank with his personality so we will see.  :)  We call him our little piglet too since he snorts when he is upset, or when he is hungry and is impatient.  It's the cutest thing.

Here are some pictures as well of everything.  Frank and I are so very blessed to welcome this little miracle into the world.  Both of our children mean everything to us... Emerson and Cameron are the best gifts we could ever receive.
Headed to the hospital- 38 weeks 5 days!

Cameron's first baseball... autographed by Nolan Ryan! It was actually played in the game on his birth day (April 29th) at the Ballpark in Arlington. The Rangers lost the game, but we think the baseball is a winner. :)

The adorable door wreath "Aunt Stefanie" made for Cameron.  I love this... she is so sweet.  It makes the perfect wreath for his bedroom door at home!
